About the Oakdale Theatre in Wallingford, CT
History of the Theatre
Built in 1954, the original Oakdale theatre featured a circular stage and primarily served as a summer concert venue. Throughout the 50s and 60s, the family-owned business prospered, hosting some of Broadway’s biggest shows and Rock & Roll’s brightest stars. From musicals including Oklahoma and South Pacific to rock stars like The Who and Led Zeppelin, the open-air spinning stage saw it all.
In the early 70s, the wood dome was built and the seating capacity expanded from 1,700 to 3,200 seats while maintaining the “theater in the round” style. The biggest entertainers of the day, such as Dolly Parton and the Carpenters, included Oakdale Theatre on their summer rosters. At this time, the theatre became a popular venue for country artists who preferred the in-the-round style to other arenas.
However, by the 90s, Oakdale’s circular stage was facing stiff competition from larger venues. To rival competitors, the Oakdale was transformed into its current state in 1996 which includes a 4,600-seat theatre with a modern stage. Big stars were attracted to the new stage. Brooks & Dunn opened the new theatre and Rod Stewart, Springsteen, John Mellencamp, Dave Matthews, and Coldplay followed. The theatre also hosted a series of Broadway Shows including “Grease,” “Riverdance,” “Seussical,” and more.
In 1996, the Oakdale Theatre became part of Live Nation, the largest entertainment company in the world. The venue hosted legendary performances by Britney Spears, John Mayer, and Lady Gaga, to name a few. Children’s shows such as Sesame Street Live, The Wiggles, and Dora the Explorer also visited the popular entertainment center. Today, the lineup continues to impress as outstanding performers make their way to Wallingford to capture the hearts of thousands of fans.
As part of Live Nation, this theater offers a wide variety of world-class shows. From top country artist and legendary classic rock stars to children’s entertainment and television show stars, there’s something for everyone at Oakdale Theatre. Big names like Maroon 5, Drake, Lady Antebellum, and Lynyrd Skynyrd have graced the stage, so be sure to check the events calendar for information on upcoming performances!
